Optimizing the Painting Process for Excavator Parts: Key Considerations

Painting Process for Excavator Parts

The factory is busy as usual today. Our colleagues are working hard on painting these track rollers and carrier rollers, which are orders from our major client, with a stable quantity every month.

I'm taking some photos of the products today and sharing some pictures of the painting process.

The process of spray painting tractor parts involves several key stages, from initial preparation to the final curing, to ensure a durable and high-quality finish. Here is a detailed breakdown of the process in English:
Surface Preparation
This initial phase is arguably the most crucial, as proper preparation ensures the paint adheres well and lasts longer.
  • Cleaning/Degreasing: All dirt, grease, oil, and contaminants must be removed from the parts. Methods include power washing or wiping the metal down with a solvent like acetone.
  • Rust and Old Paint Removal: Use methods like sandblasting (ideal for bare metal) or an angle grinder with a wire wheel to remove any rust spots or flaked paint. Sanding the surface also helps the new paint adhere better.
  • Smoothing/Filling: Any dents, dings, or rough spots may require filler (mastic powder) and subsequent sanding to achieve a smooth surface.
  • Final Wipe Down: The surface must be wiped clean of all sanding residue or dust using a clean cloth or a tack cloth. Once bare metal is clean, it should be primed or painted within 72 hours to prevent new rust from forming.
  • Masking: Use masking tape and plastic sheeting or paper to cover any areas (e.g., specific mounting points, complex interfaces) that should not be painted.
Priming
Primer is applied as a base coat to protect the metal from corrosion and promote strong adhesion of the top coat.
